French Revolution

People in France were inspired by the American Revolution in the 13 Colonies. The peasants, shopkeepers and middle class of France resented heavy taxes and revolted against King Louis XVI In 1789.  The French revolutionaries became violent, eventually killing both the King and Queen. A new radical government called the Republic was formed.  It was soon under attack from the nations of Europe. The Republic was ended by Napoleon, a general in the French Army who took over France, crowning himself emperor.
